Coring Test (Core Sampling) by ABC Environmental LLC
A coring test (core sampling) is a method of removing a small cylindrical section of material from a wall, floor, or ceiling to analyze all layers beneath the surface.
Unlike standard surface sampling, coring allows for full-depth inspection, revealing hidden materials that may not be visible—such as older construction layers, adhesives, or contaminants.
Many buildings—especially in New York City—have undergone multiple renovations over time. This creates layered systems where hazardous materials can be concealed.
Coring is necessary when:
* Multiple layers of materials are present (e.g., tile over tile, plaster over drywall)
* There is a risk of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) beneath the surface
* Surface sampling alone would provide incomplete or misleading results
* Regulatory compliance requires full material identification
Before any renovation or demolition, a proper inspection must identify all building materials that will be disturbed. Coring ensures that hidden layers are tested and documented.
